YES! you CAN have a Healthier Halloween!

Halloween is such a FUN holiday for children!  They LOVE it!

If your children are like mine, they look forward to it all year long!  At our house, as soon as the school supplies were purchased, our kids started talking about Halloween and planning their costumes!

Because my secret motive was to make their Halloween HEALTHIER...I found myself doing the following -

*We went to the store to buy their Halloween TOY!
*I took them to a big box store and allowed them to choose a favorite NEW toy in my chosen
price range - say $10-$15 (per child)  or whatever you feel is reasonable and that you can afford! Then, the agreement was that it would sit on top of the refrigerator waiting for them until Halloween.  In NO way was the child allowed to play with it at all - not for one minute!  This toy was their SPECIAL Halloween toy! (More on this later to explain how I used this)

*I made a BIG deal of their costumes!
I like to sew and we would make their costumes together - they chose the pattern and fabric and "helped" with the sewing process.  They often would play and stay close to my sewing area as I worked on their costumes, with the awareness that they would get to try on their costume frequently!  Now in the current day, I see such awesome costumes available at the big box stores...there are a lot to choose from and the kids will love the variety and the parents will like the availability!  No sewing necessary!

Many children just love to dress up and I found that ours certainly did also!  So...I found an
inexpensive trunk and we kept "dress up" clothes and costume stuff in it so they could play pretend costumes and characters every day!  They loved it and so did their friends!  Every year after Halloween, we added the current costumes to their trunk and the fun of their outfit lasted for a long time!

*I volunteered to be a room parent and help with the school parties!
This was a great opportunity to work closely with the teacher and also to have input in the menus planned for the class parties!  I always suggested veggie platters, fresh fruit, and if
possible, meat and cheese trays and real 100% juice as the beverage.  Now that there is
pinterest and such wonderful blogs available, it is easy to find cute snack ideas using REAL
foods - healthy foods -  to serve at children's parties!

So often with children, presentation is everything!  For example, if we served veggies with individual serving cups of dip...the children were much more likely to eat it and enjoy it!  I also learned that the older teachers were much more willing to have healthy party foods - they had already endured too many years of wild, out of control and emotional children on melt downs because of the overload of sugar at their class parties in the past!

*I served a HIGH protein supper/dinner BEFORE we went out trick or treating!
I found that this little secret made a HUGE difference for my children.  Stuffing their little tummy's with protein meant that they weren't going to struggle with low blood sugar nor blood sugar swings while we were out in costume!  Keeping their blood sugar level means LESS emotional meltdowns and with that achieved,  everyone has a much better time together!  (and they were too full to want to snitch and eat alot of candy while we were out) One of their favorite meals was meat loaf or simple baked chicken, baked potatoes, broccoli and green salad.  This menu was so easy to make ahead and then cook it in the crock pot all day, or pop it in the oven when we got home from school.

*We went out trick or treating and they loved being in their costumes, running to the houses, ringing the doorbells and shouting out "trick or treat".  One wonderful neighbor lady of ours always gave out quarters - and our kids loved her and her cash money treat! They especially looked forward to her house every year!

*I traded them the TOY for their CANDY!
So after the evening of fun - the kids always loved to sit at the kitchen table and go through their candy bags and sort through all of the candy and see what all they received!  We had a house rule that they only got to eat 3 (three) pieces of candy THAT night so they were very careful to pick and choose  to eat what they loved the most.  Because our children were not used to eating candy - usually 3 pieces was enough to give them a sugar buzz and a slight headache - and then I would bring out their new TOY and the bargin we had made before the Halloween holiday.

Remember the toy we have on the top of the refrigerator?  Their FAVORITE new toy?  Well...they can have it NOW if they buy it from me with their candy.  Yes! They get to eat the first three pieces and then they give ALL the rest of their candy to me in trade for their new toy!  They were happy to trade, because, after all, this was a toy that THEY had chosen!

What I wanted for my children was making fun memories together

What I didn't want for them was the negative effects of sugar on their little bodies! For example, eating too much sugar can seriously compromise the ability of their immune system to fight viruses, bacteria and fungal conditions. Is it any wonder that we often see an increase of sick children in November and December?

It also can have an effect on your child's behavior! - as in, they are falling apart - screaming, yelling, emotional melt downs, and so angry that nothing you say or do brings any consolation!?!  Often parents notice that within an hour after eating the sugar dose their child will be a complete emotional mess!  For some, its the big events like birthday parties and Halloween, but for others it can be the lollipop at the bank or the cookie at the bakery!

Lets not forget the effect it has on their oral health and teeth!  Sugar fuels the growth of bacteria that cause cavities - a great reason to keep the candy consumption DOWN!

I found that with a little preplanning and organization, we had an enjoyable  and positive experience of family time and today, my adult children still enjoy reminiscing about their Halloween memories!

I hope that this blog post inspires you to add a little HEALTH to your HALLOWEEN!

See you soon - at the store!

EMPOWERING PARENTS - Part 3

In this post I want to discuss some of the challenges in finding a Medical professional who not
only understands your child's issues but is willing to work with them and their unique needs.
At the end I will list some websites, blogs, books and Medical clinics that you may want to research
in more detail to see what might be of benefit for your child.

To QUOTE tacanow's website:
"An autism diagnosis seldom leads to a logical treatment path.  Because autism is considered a psychological diagnosis, many physicians don't see the value in looking for medically caused issues that might be contributing to a child's symptoms.  What many TACA families have found is, that a psychological diagnosis does not mean that you cannot have legitimate physical ailments ( also called co-morbid issues) as well.  Some recent research studies released in 2011 support what parents have been saying for years!
The American Academy of Pediatrics recognizes some of the most prominent co-morbid issues common with autism, which include but are not limited to:
*gastrointestinal distress,
*seizures
*mitochondrial disease and dysfunction,
*immune dysregulation
*food allergies
*sleep disturbances
*autoimmune issues
*persistent bacterial infections
*persistent viral infections

Additionally, autism can also come with
*mood disorders,
*extreme behaviors
*attention deficit
*self stimulatory behaviors
*obsessive compulsive behaviors
*cognitive problems
*learning differences
*speech delays
These issues vary greatly as the child ages and health status changes.

One thing we know about autism is that the diagnosis is complex and very unique to the individual.
There is a common saying in our community: when you see one child with autism, you've seen one child with autism.  Rarely do these individuals look similar.  Their health needs are also unique to their individual needs.

Behaviors that accompany autism often get explained away by the label.  "Of course he shows signs of obsessive compulsive disorder. He has autism". But what if in reality these behaviors were clues to treatable underlying MEDICAL issues?  The biomedical approach asks the question:  could some of these issues be caused by poor health?"
END QUOTE

What Biomedical doctors do that is so different is that they are investigating ALL of the clues, both behavioral and medical!  In addition, they are willing to run ALL of the necessary lab work to uncover what is making the child sick.  They are committed to healing ALL treatable issues and most of all they offer the parents HELP & HOPE while at the same time desire to see your child once again play and enjoy life!

Our local customers that are the parents of a child with this type of diagnosis are frequently frustrated with our local medical care and I sympathize deeply!  I have always believed and committed to being a source of networking for our customers and practitioners.  I LOVE when customers come into the store to tell me "their story" and to share with me the names and contact information of a doctor or practitioner who has helped them and made a difference in their health!  Invariably, a different customer will walk in my store, usually within 2 weeks, and need that exact information!  I love being the network connection!

As you can see from the list of health issues in the quoted section above, there is in fact a very real possibility that your child does have some underlying health issues.  By having them identified and treated using natural means, you may find your child is once again happy and enjoying life!  Yes, your child will most likely still need their IEP with their school, and occupational or physical therapy, and all of the other helpful modalities that are available in our county school district.  But after all, you, as a parent, want to do everything you can for your child and not to leave any stone unturned!  ALL of these contribute to the new healthy balance that you desire for your child!  They all work together!

We will be posting a brochure here that lists 4 doctors clinics - 3 in the Northern Colorado area - that have been brought to my attention by customers.  Also listed is just a small fraction of the books in our Customer Reference Library that are available to you for check out - 2 weeks for free!

Be sure to look into this subject of the "highly sensitive child" = this phrase was coined by Dr. Elaine Aron and she has made it her life's work to research, write and teach about highly sensitive people.  Who or what are they?  Well only about 20% of the population are highly sensitive.  Their senses are more acute and they feel things more deeply - they are easily and quickly overwhelmed by noises, smells, lights, actions, emotions, and chaos!  My description of them is someone with a high IQ, a sensitive soul and a thin veil.  Being in these types of situation, as in, big box chain stores, sporting events, birthday parties, holidays, carnival rides and fairs, visiting the zoo, etc. can quickly overwhelm them and they shut down as a protection.  Because of the "thin veil" they just don't seem to have the usual barrier to shut things off as other people do and so they feel assaulted and bombarded very quickly and then need to either escape into a quiet safe place or they will go into a "melt-down"!

Does any of this sound familiar to you?  Is this a description of your child or someone you know?  Dr. Elaine Aron's and Dr. Ted Zeff both have written wonderfully helpful books on this subject! They offer helpful suggestions of things that you can do to work with your child on this.  Again you will note that these are all books available in our library to be checked out & taken home at no charge!

We hope to hear from you! If you want more personalized information, please call my store to schedule an appointment and I would be happy to explain more of this to you in person.  We offer an excellent selection of supplements for children that have proven to be very effective!  Of course, we offer a delicious selection of foods that are tasty and free of artificial colors, flavors, preservatives and allergens!  So come see us - we are here to help you!

See you soon!

Empowering Parents - Part 1

My heart goes out to our customers who are parenting a child with learning issues or anything on the Autism spectrum.  It's overwhelming to live with the child's acting out as well as the emotional and physical demands of trying to meet their needs.  It is a struggle when it feels like nothing is really working and the child continues to degrade.

I have recently been working with a local practitioner in our town who is willing to offer testing that can help the foundation issues that your child may be struggling with!  I want to share this information with you in a series of blog posts - offering you HELP & HOPE!

Are you poisoning your child?
No, intentionally of course not! But, perhaps accidently?  You might be, if your child has food sensitivities or intolerances that you are not aware of.  Every time that you feed them, even a small portion of that food, it is like poison to their system!  The result will manifest in its own unique way in their body, usually with very undesirable symptoms.

On a recent previous post, we added a quiz that you can take on behalf of your child to see what kinds of symptoms that they are manifesting.  Symptoms that can all be related to eating foods that they are insensitive or intolerant to!

So what is a parent to do?  Perhaps you even have paid for allergy testing - you know, the back scratch kind?  Perhaps even, those results did not diagnose any foods, just outdoor pollens and trees?  Yet, somewhere in your heart...you just have had that parent "intuition" that you suspect that your child is reacting to a food or even a list of foods that they are eating?

Well now there is hope and help - right here in Gillette!  A local practitioner, right here in our city is now offering Food intolerance testing - with a simple blood test!

So why would you benefit from doing another test?  Most food allergy testing is done for IMMEDIATE onset food reactions  (an IgE response).  This is when the reaction takes place any time from contact up to two hours after eating it.

So picture this:  your family is eating at a popular fish place and someone eats shrimp for the first time.  Soon you notice that they have a rash developing and then they may complain about their throat constricting and you realize that they are in medical distress.  An extreme reaction would be anaphylaxis, where there is even a swelling of their tongue and throat, maybe even a drop in blood pressure and an irregular heartbeat.  Truthfully, these reactions are pretty easy to identify.  By the time you have had this same reaction to shrimp, say three or four times, and you feel sick immediately after ingesting it, it's pretty easy to conclude that you should not be eating shrimp! Some experts feel that only about 5% of food reactions are this type of response, the Immediate Onset Food reactions.

So what is more common?  Why are some people literally unknowingly poisoning their own children?  Let me introduce you to DELAYED Food reactions (IgG response)!  These are the foods that we don't start reacting to until 2 hours have passed all the way up to 4 days later!  Yes, 4 days after eating the food!  For example, you could eat shrimp on Sunday for dinner and not have any reaction until the Wednesday or Thursday following!  That is why it is so difficult to figure these out on your own, even if you faithfully keep a food journal, attempting to document every bite that your child eats and how they react and feel.  It's a real challenge to figure it out on your own!

So....that being said, let me introduce you to Alletest Blood Testing for Food Intolerances!

All it takes is a 15 minute appointment and 1 vial of blood!  They send your sample to Alletess Medical Laboratory in Norwell, MA, and 3 weeks later, your Comprehensive Food Panel IgG results are back!  The testing covers 185 of the most common foods eaten, and in addition, you will receive a packet of information, including a 4 day rotation diet to follow - comprised of all of the foods that were tested that are safe for you to eat!  It's a wonderful service, and some customers can notice improved health in their children within  3 days to 2 weeks!  All for just $350! Now those are results! And that is HELP & HOPE!

How and why should this interest you?  Well...this is back to school time and we are focusing on children with learning issues, sensory issues and those on the autism spectrum.  We understand , and sympathize with you and your child, that school may be a difficult experience for you both!

Many of the DAN doctors (now MAPS doctors) are finding that food intolerances are just ONE of the issues at the CORE of these children.  They feel that most all of them do in fact have food intolerances and testing is a great place to start on the road to improved health!

Many parents have tried to follow the GFCF (gluten free, casein free) diet that has commonly
been recommended by the DAN doctors - and it is a good starting place. But blood food intolerance testing can help you with specific answers that are correct for your child!  Not everyone is reacting to gluten nor is everyone reacting to casein, though it is common, not everyone is! So blood intolerance testing is a great place to start!

Discover the hidden link between what your child eats and how they feel, act and react!

Let me know how I can help you and your child!  Please stop in my store to discuss this issue and if you are interested, see what the testing results look like! We also have a DVD set that is available for checkout from our Customer Library that you may be interested in! Let us help!

There are other core issues for these children that we will address in upcoming posts - so sign up to follow our blog so you will be notified as soon as our posts are up! Oh and like us on Facebook!

I would love some feedback by those who read our blog - Question:  what food have you removed from your child's diet and how did they respond?  Please post your comments below - I love hearing from you!

Give your child the Nutritional Advantage this School Year!
See you soon!
