GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS!

The issue of Genetically Modified Foods (GMO'S) is of great concern to a large number of our customers!   When my daughter, Jillian and I were at Market in Portland, Oregon, we so enjoyed participating in a class that they offered on this very subject!

Genetically modified food is currently one of the most controversial practices within our agricultural system.  Very simply put, genetic modification involves taking genes from one species and inserting them into another.  For example, genes from an arctic flounder (which obviously are resistant to cold temperatures) may be spliced into a tomato to prevent frost damage, allowing yields later into the season.

This type of modification is quite different from traditional breeding techniques.  Traditional breeding typically occurs within the established boundaries of nature.  For example, tomatoes may cross-pollinate with other tomatoes, but not with rice, or with flounder.  Pigs will mate with other pigs, but not with cows.

Genetic modification splices genes between unrelated species that would NEVER crossbreed in nature.  Natural reproduction or breeding can only occur between closely related forms of life.

So, why do this?  The main arguments in favor point to increased crop yields (ability to feed the world) and a reduction in the use of insecticides and pesticides.  If true, and it were that clean and simple, then genetically modified food would indeed be the next great thing.  But there are many questions and concerns surrounding the process!

Foremost among the concerns is safety.  Are genetically modified foods safe? In 50 other countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, Puru and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production of genetically modified foods because they have not been thoroughly tested or proven to be safe.  In the United States, FDA approval of commercial production of genetically modified crops is mostly based on studies conducted by the companies who created them and profit from their sale.

As long as genetically modified foods are not properly tested for human safety before they are released for sale, there will be a cloud of uncertainty and skepticism surrounding this process.

The main reply to the challenge that genetically modified organisms (GMO'S) are not safe is that "people have been eating GM foods in the United States and other countries for more than ten years without any problems" and this proves therefore, that the products are safe.  But, genetically modified foods are NOT labeled in the US and other countries where they are consumed, making it impossible to monitor for health effects.

The current labeling policy for GM foods as put forth by the FDA requires labeling GM foods if the food has a significantly different nutritional property; if a new food includes an allergen that consumers would not expect to be present (e.g. a peanut protein in a soybean product); or if a food contains a toxicant beyond acceptable limits.  Mandatory labeling of GM foods in the United States has been proposed and bills requiring mandatory labeling have been introduced in Congress, but as of today, nothing is officially required.

GMO FAQs:

What are GMOS?
GMOs or "genetically modified organisms" are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE).  This experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding!

Virtually ALL commercial GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide.  Despite biotech industry promises, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit.

Meanwhile, a growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers' and consumers' rights!

Are GMOs LABELED?
Unfortunately, even though polls consistently show that a significant majority of Americans WANT to know if the food they are purchasing contains GMOs, the powerful biotech lobby has succeeded in keeping this information from the public.  In the absence of mandatory labeling, the Non-GMO Project was created to give consumers the informed choice they deserve!

Which FOODS might be GMO?
The following crops are at risk of being genetically engineered, either because GMO varieties are in commercial production, or because of contamination from unapproved trial varieties.  Ingredients from these crops may not be used in Non-GMO Project Verified products unless DNA testing shows them to be compliant with the Non-GMO Project Standard:
*ALFALFA
*CANOLA
*CORN
*COTTON
*FLAX
*PAPAYA
*RICE
*SOY
*SUGAR BEETS
*YELLOW SUMMER SQUASH
*ZUCCHINI

Ingredients derived from these risk crops include (but are not limited to:)
Amino Acids, Aspartame, Ascorbic Acid, Solidum Ascorbate, Vitamin C, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Ethanol, Flavorings ("natural and artificial") , High-Fructose Corn Syrup, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, Lactic Acid, Maltodextrins, Molasses, Monosodium Glutamate, Sucrose, Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP), Xanthan Gum, Some Vitamins, some Yeast Products.

The following animal derivatives are also considered high-risk by the Non-GMO Project Standard, because of potential GMO contamination in feed and other inputs:
*MILK
*MEAT
*EGGS
*HONEY & OTHER BEE PRODUCTS

HOW can I AVOID GMOs?

Tip #1:  In the U.S., GMOs are in as much as 80% of conventional processed food!
To avoid GMOs, buy certified organic products which cannot intentionally include any GMO ingredient.  Buy products labeled 100% organic, organic or made with organic ingredients.  You can be doubly sure if the product also has a Non-GMO Project Verified Seal.

Tip #2Look for the Non-GMO Project Seal.
Products that carry the Non-GMO Project Seal are independently verified to be in compliance with North America's only third party standard for GMO avoidance, including testing of at-risk ingredients.

Tip#3Avoid at-risk ingredients
Avoid products made with ingredients that might be derived from GMOs.  Or be sure that when buying and consuming foods from the list of fifteen foods above that you choose the certified organic choices.

Tip #4: Download the Guide
Visit NonGMOShoppingGuide.com to download the growing list of Non-GMO products available and check out the iPhone application, ShopNoGMO free at the iTunes store!

As the owner of a retail health food store, I have noticed that in the last 10 years,  customers are complaining more frequently of digestive issues, food intolerances or even worsening food allergy reactions.  Is there a connection with the increase of these symptoms and GMO food consumption?

We at HealthStyles Market are committed to Non-GMO foods!  We are stocking as much and as large of a selection of organic and non-GMO foods as we have found, and continue to add to our product choices weekly!

We also have added The GMO Trilogy DVD set to our video checkout library - so feel free to call us to request that item for checkout.  Our library books and DVD's check out for two weeks at no charge to you!

You have a right to know about GMO's and you have the right to vote with your buying dollars!  Be informed and make the BEST choice for yourself and the health of your family!

See you soon!

MORNING IMMUNE COCKTAIL!

Do you ever find that some mornings are just that.....MORNING?!?
You feel a little tired?....or sluggish?...or your spring allergies are getting you down?  Or everyone in your work environment is feeling under the weather?  Maybe you just need a little "pick me up"????

I love this Morning Immune Cocktail for just those reasons!  Its a great beverage in the morning to just give you a boost of sunshine to get you going and moving forward with a SMILE!

Yes...we are starting with  OUR certified organic oranges - fresh squeezed - but then we are amping it up a little!  Our organic produce arrives FRESH every Friday and WOW! Fresh is BEST!

I have a very simple old fashioned citrus juicer that I just love!  Its fast, easy & simple - its gets the job done quickly and is very easy to clean!

MORNING IMMUNE COCKTAIL!

Recipe Ingredients:

2 cups fresh orange juice
2 Lemon Lime Power Pak Envelopes from -Trace Minerals Research
2 tubes Umcka Cold Care - Nature's Way
Hot boiling water - 8 oz

Optional: 2 bottles of Orange Recharge from RW Knudsen
Also optional:  1/2 tsp Sweet Leaf Valencia Orange Stevia drops

Instructions:  While juicing fresh oranges, boil water for tea.
In two separate mugs, pour power paks in one mug and umcka cold cares in second mug.  Pour a very small amount of boiling water over powders and stir until well dissolved.  Then add more water to dilute - usually about 4 oz for each mug.

In a large 2 quart pitcher, pour in orange juice, dissolved mixtures from mugs, and stir well.  If using, pour in the 2 bottles of Orange Recharge and stir again.  Add ice if desired.  Drink up & enjoy!

Our customers love these Trace Mineral Power Paks!  We offer them in four flavors - Lemon Lime, Cranberry, Cherry Limade and the new Pina Colada!  They are a flavored effervescent "fizzing" drink with vitamins and over 72 electrolytes!  They are gluten free, vegan and sweentened with fructose!  Umcka Cold Care from Nature's Way is another customer favorite!  A wonderful soothing hot drink that shortens the duration/reduces the severity of symptoms of colds!
Yes, both of these products can be used just as labeled - but sometimes I like to combine them for the additional support they offer when used together!
RW Knudsen has been offering their healthy Recharge for years - its always a customer favorite at HealthStyles Market!  We stock it in orange and lemon flavors and its great tasting just as it is!  Recharge Sports Drinks offer a clean option for athletes looking for a natural thirst quencher!  Whether you're a week-end warrior or a professional athlete, this refreshing, natural sports drink will help take you to a new level...WITHOUT the added sugars and artificial ingredients.  It is exclusively fruit juice sweetened!

I like to recycle and reuse the Recharge bottles - so easy to carry to work with me and a wonderful Energy on the go kind of beverage!
By making a pitcher full, I have enough for at least 4 days!

With these core ingredients, it's so easy to get creative and make up your own Morning Immune Cocktail!

Dairy Free Joy!

Oh. my. GOODNESS!!!   New Dairy Free JOY!

I just have to tell you about the newest dairy free "milks" that have just arrived at HealthStyles Market!  Two new additions...Flax "Milk" and Sunflower "Milk".

Good Karma Flax Milk is just like you guessed....made out of cold pressed flax oil! It is lactose and dairy free...gluten free....soy free! Each 8 oz serving has 1200mg of Omega 3 plus 345 mg of Omega 6 and 385mg of Omega 9 -  and yet is only 25 calories!

Its as rich in calcium as diary milk and is also kosher, vegan and non-GMO!  Your child will never know that they are getting the benefits of flax oil right in their serving of "milk"!   But the best part?  It is rich and creamy and tastes wonderful!  We have both the original and the unsweetened versions available in our nondairy refrigerated section!

Want to know more?  Check out their website: http://www.goodkarmafoods.com/

The second new option is Sunrich Naturals Sunflower Beverage and it is made from sunflower seeds!   It also is diary free...gluten free...soy free! One 8 oz serving is 45 calories and contains 50% RDA of Vitamin E and 20% RDA of Folic Acid!

It is shelf stable and we are stocking all three options, the original or unsweetened or vanilla.  It too is rich and creamy and just delicious!  An added convenience is not having to refrigerate it until opened.  If you want to know more, their website is:  http://www.sunrich.com/

EIther one of these new beverages are the perfect base for your morning smoothies or to pour over your favorite cereal or to cook with in any recipe calling for dairy!

How do I describe them to you?  To me, its almost like the Flax milk is similar to Coconut milk and the Sunflower milk is similar to Almond milk.

For years, I have used Rice Milk as the dairy substitute in my kitchen and it always seemed like a very weak skim milk to me.  Having grown up in Minnesota, I was never a big skim milk fan and I liked cream way too much!  I LOVE these new choices....they are so much richer and creamier and it helps me to feel like I am not missing the dairy at all!

Perhaps you are thinking that you have no interest or need for a dairy substitute?

Let me give you some "food for thought" - as quoted from a book we offer in our Customer Checkout Library called "Go Dairy Free" by Alisa Marie Fleming.

First of all, I LOVE her book!  Its the BEST guide and cookbook for milk allergies, lactose intolerance and casein free living that I have ever seen!  All under one cover!  We also have her book for sale in our book department.

Quoting from page 21 she lists the most common symptoms of milk allergy as:

SKIN:
Itchy Red Rash
Eczema
Hives
"Shiners" of Black Eyes
Aphthous Ulcers (Canker Sores)
Swelling of Lips, Mouth, Tongue, Face, or Throat
DIGESTIVE:
Abdominal Pain
Abdominal Cramps
Abdominal Bloating
Diarrhea
Gas/Flatulence
Nausea
Vomiting
RESPIRATORY:
Runny Nose/Congestion
Sneezing
Watery Eyes
Itchy Eyes
Coughing
Wheezing
Shortness of Breath
Recurrent "Colds"
Recurrent Ear Infections
Sinusitis
Behavioral:
Fatigue
Migraine Headaches
Hyperactivity (ADHD)
Irritability
Night Waking
Anxiety
Sore Muscles and Joints

Alisa has a beyond fantastic website and blog at: ghttp://www.godairyfree.org/
She offers everything you need to join the dairy free lifestyle and still enjoy life!

With just one or two of these symptoms, your life can become a daily challenge of suffering and really....is it worth it to you?  Really?

We, at HealthStyles Market are stocking a very large variety of dairy free food options like milks, cheeses, yogurts, kefirs, sour cream, cream cheese, butter substitutes,  ice creams, frozen treats,  pudding cups, chocolate bars, chocolate chips and more!

WELCOME!

Welcome to my blog!

I am the owner of HealthStyles Market, a real "brick & morter" store (as they say in our industry)!  We are located in Gillette, Wyoming - the northeast corner of the state and it is a great place to be in business!  The most wonderful people live and work in this community and eventually, the ones who are interested and committed to learning how to improve their health, find their way into my store!

As a company, we are dedicated to providing our customers with "positively outstanding personalized service"....which we aim to do for each individual who walks in our store doors!  But I would like to share with you that it is really a privelege to provide that kind of service.  Every day, our customers trust us with their concerns, questions and stories and we get to share with them in  their health journey - a privelege indeed!

On this blog, I would like to share with you - health information, tips, recipes, research and answers to some of the varied questions that we get asked all in a days work.  A place to centrally locate what I have tried to carry around in my memory through these past years  and information that I have tried to store in my blue "subject" file folder drawer, along with all of the new health information we learn about daily  as we do research to answer all of those customer questions!

So please join me on this blog as we share these miles together on the journey of health!

See you soon!
